Welcome to another Trailer Talkback Thursday here at the Cinema Cafe Podcast. Today we look at a trailer which, even though brief, has me personally very excited, Disney's John Carter.
In my household, the name Edgar Rice Burroughs is very well known and the John Carter series is definitely no exception. It's been a while since I've read these, but when I was younger there were always some of my favorite stories to read. So when I heard that Disney & Pixar were going to make a movie based on them, I got excited.
Mind you, I was a little skeptical when I heard Pixar was going to make a live-action version, but judging from the trailer it looks like they've done a good job so far in capturing Barsoom. The trailer itself is pretty well done, both with the excellent sequences and the great choice of music. All I know is that 2012 is shaping up to be one of the best years of cinema I might possibly ever see.

Trailer Talkback: Sucker Punch (2011)
The trailer for Sucker Punch just came out. This is Zach Snyder's new film, following Watchmen. I'm not sure what this is about but there's young scantly clad women from a cabaret show carrying huge guns, enormous samurai robots, burning zeppelins and a drago. All taking place in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world. Looks interesting enough but I'm sure young boys everywhere are salivating. Enjoy the trailer:

Trailer Talkback: Inception (2010)
The word "obsession" means the domination of one's thoughts and feelings by a persistent idea, image, or desire(cite). Well, the problem I have here is that I have an obsession with the Inception trailer. I first saw this new cut trailer at the Iron Man 2 showing last Friday in IMAX. I was absolutely blown away by the cinematography, the special effects, and the dreamy men involved in the film. Oh and did I mention this is written and directed by Christopher Nolan--you know, the man who did Memento and The Dark Knight.
The idea of Inception is quite interesting--stealing secrets in the dream world and how it's executed is aesthetically mind blowing. Though DiCaprio isn't my favorite actor, I will admit, he's great in these roles. And who else did I see in trailer? Michael Caine (our favorite Alfred--I know I'm lame), Cillian Murphy, Marion Cotillard, Juno (I mean Ellen Page) and my all time favorite JGL. After this excited and nonsensical rambling, I think you can tell that I have absurdly high standards for this film when it comes out in July. I hope it meets all my expectations and more. Trailer Talkback - Trailer Rundown
For every movie released, there's like 5-10 different trailers released for them and if you happen to catch them all, generally you don't have to see the movie since the trailers have given everything away. How many times have you watched a trailer and seen the ending? How many times have you watched a trailer and have seen the"twist?" Don't get me wrong, I love trailers. I just think in modern times, the trailer has gotten away from what they were originally intended to do, get you interested without giving anything away.
Case in point- the latest Hot Tub Time Machine trailer. I've seen the movie already and loved it. The original trailers for it are awful, and I joked with my friends before we saw the movie at a screening that the trailers were keeping out all the best stuff. Guess what? They did and that made the movie all the more enjoyable. However the latest Hot Tub trailer gives away one of the best comedic moments that builds throughout the entire movie, the fact that one of the characters finds out his wife is cheating on him and calls her 9 year old self to accuse and berate her. A great pay-off at the end of the movie. But now, bam, the trailer has given away the pay-off. Bah!!
Anyway, there's my little rant about trailers and here's my double standard as I present to you some more trailers that have peaked my interest. This week I'm going to focus on some lesser known movies coming out.
The Mechanic (December 15th)
Directed by Simon West (of Con Air and Tomb Raider fame) and starring Jason Statham, The Mechanic is a remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson film of the same name which I previously reviewed on the podcast and loved. Basically the "mechanic" is a hitman (played by Statham) who trains an apprentice and well, I'll let the trailer show you. Basically it looks like a more hard-core The Transporter. This is an early preview since the movie doesn't come out until December, but its from the directed of Con Air and stars Jason Statham. What else do you need?
The Good, The Bad, The Weird (April 23rd in limited release)
This 2008 South Korean film finally sees its North American release. Directed by Kim Ji-woon (of A Tale of Two Sisters and A Bittersweet Life), this is a Korean spaghetti western in an homage to the Sergio Leone film The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. I saw this film last year and it is awesome. Here's the synopsis:
Set in the 1930s Manchurian desert, where lawlessness rules and ethnic groups clash, three Korean men fatefully meet each other on a train. The Good, Do-won (Woo-sung Jung) is a bounty hunter who tracks down criminals with rewards on their heads. The Bad, Chang-yi (Byung-hun Lee) is the leader of a group of bandits and can’t stand to be second best. The Weird, Tae-goo (Kang-ho Song) is a train robber with nine lives. The three strangers engage in a chase across Manchuria to take possession of a map Tae-goo discovers while robbing the train. Also on the hunt for the mysterious map, are the Japanese army and Asian bandits. In this unpredictable, escalating battle for the map, who will stand in the end as the winner?
So yeah, I'm so happy to see this finally hit cinema's here. Do yourself a favor, if your lucky enough to have it playing in a city near you, check it out. If not, definitely check it out when it hits dvd. It's just such an odd ball western that I feel it needs to be seen to fully understand how odd it truly is.
Predators (July 7th)
Yeah I know this isn't a "lesser" known move, but damn if I don't care. I've been waiting years for a new Predator movie and I can not wait to see this. Directed by Nimrod Antal (of Armored and Vacany fame), Predators stars Adrian Brody, Laurence Fishburne and a host of other actors as the new "prey" for the Predators. Here's the synopsis:
The film stars Adrien Brody as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors who come to realize they've been brought together on an alien planet... as prey. With the exception of a disgraced physician, they are all cold-blooded killers – mercenaries, Yakuza, convicts, death squad members – human "predators" that are now being systemically hunted and eliminated by a new breed of alien Predators.
Wow. The trailer looks fantastic. My only question? How can Adrian Brody even have a semblance of a chance of survival fighting numerous Predators when Arnold barely defeated one in the original? We shall see. This movie will be sending geek hearts all aflutter when it finally gets released.

Trailer Talkback - Trailer Rundown
It's Oscar time as this Sunday brings the world the 82nd Annual Academy Awards. As we finally bid adieu to the movie year that was 2009, I thought I'd take the time to showcase some movie trailers that have me most excited for 2010. Enjoy.
The Losers (release April 23rd)
Here is the action-espionage film based on the 2003 Vertigo comics series of the same name by Andy Diggle and Jock. Frankly I can't wait to see this movie. The characters look like they just stepped from the comic page, the trailer shows wonderful action, humor and it's got Zoe Saldana, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Chris Evans, what more needs to be said. My one hope is that this movie does well because I would love to see some sequels, although the movie does look like it covers the entire 32 issue comic series. Check out the trailer below.
A-Team (release June 11th)
Who doesn't remember and look fondly on the original A-Team NBC show that ran 5 seasons from 1983-1986. I just find it funny that the powers that be have finally decided to release an A-Team movie the same year that The Losers is being released when both movies look roughly the same, but yeah this one's got Liam Neeson so bam, that's enough for me. I wonder if the nostalgia factor will push this movie through to a big box office win, but I for one cannot wait for this action pack walk though memory lane. Check out the trailer below.
Kick-Ass (release April 16th)
Here is another comicbook adaptation, this one based on the 2008 Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. series of the same name. Frankly while the comic series is all kinds of fun, I'm blown away by how great the trailer looks. I cannot wait for 12-year old Hit-Girl ass kicking action. I cannot wait for some McLovin sidekick action. I cannot for some Nic Cage spandex wearing action. This is a definite must-see. Check out the red-band trailer below.

Trailer Talk - MacGruber
Penny and I may be one of the few people who still watch Saturday Night Live every week and one of our favorite skits on the show is the MacGyver parody, MacGruber, 20-second skits where the MacGyver wannabe tries to disarm bombs with paper clips and chewing gum but ultimately always fails due to some personal issues and seemingly dies. The sketch is ridiculous because there's been about 26 of them, and while MacGruber always fails, he continues to called on to stop weapons of mass destruction.
Anyway, so when I heard that SNL was making a MacGruber movie I wondered how if it was possible to take a 20-second skit where a guy always fails his mission and dies and make it into a fully realized 90 minute movie. Well the first trailer has hit the internet waves (it's a red-band!!) and I have to say, it looks pretty damn funny. It's taken the 80's camp of the character and kicked it up 10 notches. I am now officially on board and cannot wait to see the new movie. Check out the trailer below. I'm curious to hear from people who have never seen the SNL sketch on what their thoughts are of the trailer and the upcoming movie.

Trailer Talk - Sex and the City 2
So I stumbled onto the Sex and the City 2 trailer yesterday on one of my fashion sites and I was stunned I hadn't see it yet. I love the opening with Jay-Z / Alicia Keyes' "Empire State of Mind" playing in the background. Seeing Carrie, Charlotte, Samantha, and Miranda brought so back so much joy. Sex and the City (SATC) was just one of those shows that you remember every episode and detail. And if you listen to the show, you know I'm not the overly girly type but when it comes to SATC, my knees buckle. The fashion, the girl power, and the humor were all reasons why I was attracted to the show. And the occasional man candy. I loved the characters no matter how flawed they were, that's what made them real in an unreal world. I saw the SATC movie last year, and I'll be seeing the new one this year. My only concern is, what will this movie be about?
I think the fashion and the characters are enough to get me there but I really hope there is some semblance of a story line. There's lots of clips of clothes, vacation(?) scenes but no story but then again, that always seems to be top secret. Enjoy the trailer.

Trailer Talk - Karate Kid remake
So Sony has finally released the first trailer for their upcoming Karate Kid remake starring Jaden Smith as Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan as Mr. Han, the Mr. Miyagi mentor type that can't speak English. Seriously though, I'm a big fan of the original, but it's frankly awful and should have stayed in the 80's. Yes, Jaden Smith is still the bane of all the acting gods, like he's slapping the face of all the people who see acting as a serious craft. And yes, since this takes place in Beijing, China they are techincally practising kung-fu instead of karate, but who the hell cares!!! None of that detracts from how this remake is still a bad idea, although I must admit, it does look very sleek and... fun??
The one thing I don't understand, in the original film, Ralph Macchio beat up a bunch of white kids in Cali who learned their craft from a martial arts studio in a strip mall, so yeah, maybe he could have beaten them after learning karate during one long summer. However, Jaden Smith is going to China and beating up kids who have learned martial arts in Shaolin temples since they were young. Seriously?!! Check out the trailer below and thanks for Firstshowing for it. Again it looks like it could be decent so fingers crossed. The picture above from the final tournament fight already looks better and I love the fly and chopsticks homage/spoof.

Trailer Talk - Avatar
Not to be confused with M. Night Shyamalan's Avatar: The Last Airbender, this is James Cameron's 10 years in the making epic that supposedly will revolutionize the way people view films. Here's the synopsis:
How great will the filmmaking technology on display be that Cameron's been working on for the last 10 years? Well, say what you will about Titanic, but the special effects in that movie revolutionized filmmaking at the time. Will lighting strike twice? Check out the trailer below (thanks to FirstShowing) and you be the judge.
Two things that you need to first note about the movie. 1) Its shot entirely in HD so you don't get the real feel for the movie without the trailer being in Hi-Def and 2) The film will be in a totally new immersive type of 3D that Cameron has created which looks so good, filmmakers that have seen it say that they will no longer shoot movies the traditional way, but will use this type of 3D filmmaking from now on. So those are just two things to keep in my mind while first impressions of the trailer swim in your head.
As for me, I think the film looks beautiful, a wonderful mix of sci-fi and fantasy. However, the trailer does give off a Final Fantasy: Spirits Within vibe to me, which is never good because that film was the first film to utilize photorealistic cgi and was an absolute terrible mess. Still Avatar is a movie I've been waiting all year to see. My expectations are absudly high for this film and if it's not the revolution in cinematic filmmaking Cameron purports it to be... I may just sit and cry, sobbing in the dark theater as my fellow movie patrons file out and Penny looks on at me in disgust. Please Cameron, I trust you. Please don't make a grown man cry for dissapointment. Please?
